wirseshark 2.6.3 and 2.6.4 takes 2 minutes to initialise capture plugins?

asked 2018-10-14 11:43:01 +0000

Noticed a distinct change in speed (circa 2minutes) to load capture plugins on wireshark launch. Using win 7 pro with LAN connection only. Is there a reason for this?

Are you installing exactly the same capture plugins as used previously? Have you changed the capture library from WinPcap to npcap?

@grahamb I have both npcap and winPcap now. on 2.6.3 install only winPcap and still the same issue.

I was asking if anything else had changed apart form the version, not suggesting you change from Winpcap to npcap. If using npcap, I recommend removing Winpcap.

Try uninstalling Wireshark, and then re-installing without any plugins. If this improves things try reinstalling a single plugin at a time to locate the one causing difficulty.

Were you able to isolate which plugin is causing the problem? It would be interesting to know what that so we can fix it.

Process I followed - installed wireshark with no no plugins and clearly no interfaces were recongnised. Installed npcap-0.99-r7 as the stable version would not download. Wireshark loaded immediately an showed interfaces. Just installed winPcap 4.1.3 and Wireshark again loaded seamlessly. The only two thing that were different from the original install was - I downloaded and installed npcap-0.99-r7 and winPcap 4.1.3 in that order without the winPcap compatability mode and I did not install the USBcap. Really pressed from time right now but will give it all a deeper look as soon as able.

Wireshark will only use one of npcap and WinPcap, and recent releases prefer npcap if found. I think there is little point in having both installed.
