Ad-free version available?

With the latest version the tipps&tricks banner was added which also includes ads. I understand that this is a way of financing the development etc. but for business usage, this is not the best way.

Is it possible to get an ad-free version of wireshark in exchange for a donation or a subscription? We would like to continue using this software and also want to support wireshark in funding, but the ad in the software is not the preferred way to do this. As i think that wireshark is espacially heavy used in business environments, i think a paid ad-free version is the better way to go.

Are there any options to do this? Is it maybe be planned to do this?

Kindly regard, SL

Hackers favorite way into a machine is by sending a packet that crashes wireshark and then jmps from there to execute code. Sure hope these advertisements are static from the harddrive, not confusing the situation by going out to the internet.

Wireshark is GPLed, so it's not as if others couldn't create a non-paid ad-free version.

From Jaap's comment, it appears that an AdNix option is under development.

(Warning: the color scheme for the linked site appears to have been chosen by somebody unfamiliar with the exotic concept of "readability"; low-contrast-with-the-background text colors should be banned by law all across the planet, under penalty of having a bot set up that will periodically check the site and forcibly increase the text contrast, forcibly overriding the developer's "aesthetic" sense.)

While waiting for updates to the Sidebar Preferences, the ads can be disabled by following the steps in this video:

The current Users Guide at 11.23. Welcome Page Banner Slides says

"The welcome page displays a rotating banner carousel with slides for events, sponsorship information, and tips. These slides are loaded from JSON resource files embedded in the application at build time. "Slide visibility can be toggled per type in the welcome page sidebar preferences."

1 I find no such setting under advanced or appearances.

2 If the information is in the build, then how are event notices updated? This implies Wireshark by default is sending and receiving information while running. Not a good idea.

  1. Indeed an omission, that is being corrected as we speak.
  2. The event notices are from the time the release is made. Also these are time limited. There's no live updating of these slides, so no sending and receiving information on that.

There's a change pending where you have the option to disable a selection of, or all banner slides. These should become available in the 4.6.6 release, together with some other essential fixes. Tentatively planned for May 27th, but could come sooner.
