I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but I've had this problem ever since I started using Wireshark and the developers seem to have not fixed it or improved it in any way. I use Wireshark on Windows, so I'm not sure if the same problem exists in other OS versions.

Issue: When I launch the Wireshark application (Windows), it checks for updates. If there is an update and I choose to install it, it will download the update, and when it finishes downloading, I click "Install update", and it will give some kind of error that the application is still open and needs to be closed. I close the app, and the option to Install Update disappears with it.

I'm not sure why this is still an issue after all this time. Can't the application just close itself and update? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,

Neocec

Windows version? Are there any elevation requests when attempting the update?

Yes it's the WIndows version. No, there isn't any elevation requests.

Sorry, I meant which version of Windows?

Any version of Windows. I'm using Windows 7. I just tried it now when trying to upgrade from 2.6.0 to 2.6.1 and got this error

Wireshark cannot be restarted. Make sure that you don't have any unsaved documents and try again.

I get this error even after I open a saved PCAP file and try to update within the application.

I had the same problem, run the application as administrator and it worked fine. May be the message on screen needs to be fixed.

I just tried to update version 4.2.0 from within the application but it failed. In my recollection, most of the time, updating the application within the application fails, whether I started it as an administrator or an ordinary user. My solution is to download and install the application separately. It would be nice when updating in the application does work.

See the release notes for 4.2.2 here. There was a bug in the updater (for 4.2.0 and 4.2.1) that requires a manual download and install of 4.2.2 or later.

Note that 4.2.6 is the current stable version at time of writing.

I update many machines every release using the built-in updater and apart from the issues noted above with 4.2.0 and 4.2.1, it works every time for me. Note I do NOT run Wireshark as an elevated process when I invoke the update, the installer will request elevation.

Oh, that's great news. I'm sorry to have missed the release notes, I'm already looking forward for the next update.

I have found that if you have a capture file open, the update will not work. You have to close the capture file (File >> Close) and then the update should work when back on the main window.

I've found that if the capture is not saved then the update fails. Opening an old capture still allows an update.
