I am new to using wireshark.

I have a device which is connected to the internet, it receives time information. I would like to monitor the packets going to and from the device. How can I setup wireshark (if I can) on my PC to monitor the external device?

I'd suggest to start from here and eventually come back for clarification. In short, you cannot without additional hardware, unless

  • your PC has at least two Ethernet interfaces, or
  • your existing router supports capturing, or
  • your existing switch supports traffic mirroring.

There are many way to do that, depending on the specifics. Have a look here on what we've collected on that subject over the years.
