Excessive TCP retransmissions, Dup acks and out-of-order

asked 2022-09-08 00:13:35 +0000

Maybe this is not entirely wireshark related but I think this is the right place to get an answer to this. I started wireshark and visited 2 or 3 websites, did a speedtest and i was very surprised by a lot of TCP retransmissions, TCP Dup acks and TCP out-of-orders on 5ghz wifi connection. Decided to give a try to the congested 2.4ghz and unsurprisingly, i got the same results.

I know 802.11 contemplates L2 retries, i did not know that it can spread to upper layers and affect TCP.

Is this a normal behavior of wireless connections or am i just in a bad luck and having interference ?

Setup: macbook pro 2013

It depends. If everyone would play ball and put wifi channels correctly then Some of this can be compensated on L2 but in my experience I expect packet loss on WiFi in most environments visible in PCAP files.
