wireshark can't capture UDP packets for ipcamera

asked 2020-02-12 09:33:24 +0000

I am trying to capture packets which contains WIFI ssid and pwd provided to ipcamera for connecting to wifi.

While running tcpdump(on Android device) I can see the packets(UDP) with ssid and pwd but keeping laptop(ubuntu 18.04.2) in same network and firing Wireshark doesn't show me those packets...

Am i missing anything ?

I assume you have some App installed on the Android device and it sends, via UDP, this sensitive information? I would hope it somehow gets protected before being transmitted.

Anyway, if it is unicast traffic between the camera and phone, it is unlikely you will see it unless you take action to forward the unicast traffic to the Linux laptop. See Ethernet capture setup for details when using an Ethernet switch: https://wiki.wireshark.org/CaptureSetup/Ethernet.

This is all based on assumption - you could be on WiFi, in managed or monitor mode, or some other configuration...
