npcap loopback driver Locks up Win 10 [closed]
Attempted to install 3.0.2 on windows 10 1803. When it attempted to install npcap the box dumped out to blue screen with IRQ error. Now I can not uninstall the driver. If I try to remove the npcap loopback driver the box crashes with the same error. So far I have been able to repro this on one other system I dare not do it on a third until I understand how to remove the associated driver and any trainwreck it has left behind.
What builds was this tested against?
How to do I clean this up?
Wireshark uninstall did not fix this.
Thank you
Chris
Booted into safemode as the system started locking up repeatedly. Was nearly impossible to use the box. Removed the npcap loopback driver in safe mode and rebooted. The system had file system issues that sfc and even third party tools had issues with so I reset the box. Sad I had to do this. Were the file system issues there before all this? I don't know. I do know the box was table since 5/20 as it had just been reset for another user. While it is possible there was a compounding issue the issue did start with the install of npcap. I think I will stick to wireshark on Linux where it appears to run without any issue. Just providing this in the event someone else has the issue.
I am still trying to understand the same behavior on another system. They were both similar but I ...(more)
Again, I would STRONGLY suggest that you report this as an Npcap issue. Most Wireshark developers have no knowledge of the Npcap code's internals, and those of us who have some knowledge don't have enough knowledge to be able to help - this is the sort of problem for which you REALLY need the assistance of the Npcap developers.
Why are you saying again? It was answered. The reason I posted it here is the code is included in wireshark, its broken it trashed the box. I updated it as reference in the event someone else runs into the problem. There are a number of other reports from others having the same issue.. There is no need to pile on
Thank you for your excellent bug report. I'd like to point out section 11 of the GPL 2.0 which is the licence that Wireshark is distributed under:
Thank you for your help! My apologies for being an ass. I am sick with the flu and I really should not even be doing this right now. (That said I did not read details or follow the correct process) I did get this filed over with npcap thanks to the info you guys supplied Have a fantastic Friday!
