I want to investigate the 3GPP specification versions in current wireshark 2.6.4 for some 5G and LTE protocols, and the roadmap for a newer spec version, for example 2018-Sep.

I checked the wireshark 2.6.4 codes and summarized the current supported versions as below. If any inaccuracy, please correct me.

Protocol Name 3GPP Specs Wireshark 2.6.4 on 2018-Oct-11
F1AP TS 38.473 R15 V15.0.0 (2017-12)
5G PDCP TS 38.323 Not Available
5G RRC TS 38.331 R15 V15.0.0 (2017-12)
5G NAS TS 24.501 Draft v0.4.0 (2018-02)
S1AP TS 36.413 R15 V15.0.0 (2017-12)
LTE_NAS TS 24.301 R15 V15.2.0 (2018-03)
LTE_RRC TS 36.331 R15 V15.0.1 (2017-12)
X2AP TS 36.423 R15 V15.0.0 (2017-12)
GTPv2 TS 29.274 R15 V15.2.0 (2017-12)
Diameter TS 29.272 R15 V15.2.0 (2017-12)

Do you have any ideas or clues for wireshark roadmap for the newer versions? For example, when will wireshark support the 2018-09 version specs for above protocols?

Work on the newer specs are done in the development branch and not backported. I think we are fairly up to date there.

Thanks for the encouraging info.

Do you know the rough plan for the newer specs? Will they be included in 2.6.x, or 3.0?

New functionality is not backported. The changes will go into the next release.

I noticed that some protocols of R15 2018-09 versions were committed to Wireshark master branch in recent days, as below. And the test build 2.9.0 was available for verification.

Do you know the rough target release date for Wireshark 3.0, for example, 2018 Dec, 2019 Jan, or someone later days?

Protocol Name 3GPP Specs Wireshark master branch for 3.0 (TBD)
F1AP TS 38.473 R15 V15.3.0 (2018-09)
5G PDCP TS 38.323 R15 V15.1.0 (2018-04)
5G RRC TS 38.331 R15 V15.3.0 (2018-09)
5G NAS TS 24.501 R15 V15.1.0 (2018-09)
S1AP TS 36.413 R15 V15.3.0 (2018-09)
LTE_NAS TS 24.301 R15 V15.4.0 (2018-09)
LTE_RRC TS 36.331 R15 V15.3.0 (2018-09)
X2AP TS 36.423 R15 V15.3.0 (2018-09)
GTPv2 TS 29.274 R15 V15.2.0 (2017-12)
Diameter TS ...

As far as I know no date is decided yet. But if you are working in 5G you are probably better off with the development version as that will be keept up to date. 3,0 will stay on the level it has at the cutoff date.
