how to capture a different port on the same switch

asked 2024-09-17 14:03:05 +0000

Installed switch is a HP2920 and my laptop is on port 25. My printer I want to capture packets from is on port 20 of that same switch. How do I setup a packet capture using Wireshark Version 4.4.0 (installed on the laptop connected to port 25).

Appreciate some guidance, nor3ert

That depends on what the switch provides as monitor port options. A Quick Look on the internet leads to this.

Here is a reference to get started: https://wiki.wireshark.org/CaptureSetup/Ethernet

The exact solution depends on what you have available to you in terms of HW, SW, and access. Looks like that is a managed switch that has port mirroring (also called monitoring or span port).
