Are there differences between Wireshark and Wireshark Development

The current vulnerabilities identified require me to upgrade to 4.2.6 However I have already deployed Wireshark Development Community. What version is this and does it include the 4.2.6 updates to resolve the vulnerability?

What are the differences between the 2 downloads. I recognize that the developer version allows for modifications, but does the standard download offer similar functionality.

I have network engineers as well as Information security using the wireshark 3.6 which I have requested them to remove. Am I crazy to let them use the Development version that has already passed our technology selection process?

Wireshark generally has 3 active "releases" as shown below:

  • Stable - currently 4.2.6, this is the most stable version for general use
  • Old stable - currently 4.0.16, kept around for those that have specific requirements and can't upgrade to stable
  • Development - currently 4.3.0, this is where new features are implemented, for this that are happy living on the bleeding edge.

See the wiki page on the Wireshark Lifecycle for more info.

...including understanding that there's no stable guarantee of stability. Features, dissections, UI, etc. may change without notice.
