How stable is the development build?

Dear Wireshark developers

I have the pleasure to introduce a few colleagues to our favorite network analysis tool. I really love the new feature with the packet diagram view which is available in version 3.3.

Then again, I don't want to frustrate students (or me as a presenter) with hickups or even crashes that might come with a development build.

So I dare asking the question, if it's worth to go for the latest and greatest or rather stick to version 3.2

PS: We are not diving into fancy protocols. Focus is on the GUI plus a few selected protocols like IPv4, ICMP and TCP.

There's no guarantee with Wireshark, didn't you read the licence :-)

The answer somewhat depends on whether you're using the nightly builds, or the "official" dev releases. The nightly builds have all the newest code so may suffer a bit, whereas the "official" builds are a snapshot in time with no further code. If one of the "official" builds is found to be "bad" we'll make a new one. All builds do get run through our test suite though.

In summary, use one of the "official" dev builds, it's easier to get everyone in the class on the same page and it's likely to be OK.

Thank you for the quick response. I'll go with the latest dev build.

And no, I did not read the license. But then again, I am just glad that Wireshark works as good as it does. Without guarantee, but with an unmatched reputation.
