How to use "Welcome to Wireshark" page

I'm new to Wireshark, and on launch, see a "Welcome to Wireshark" page. There are no instructions, so it's not a great way to start using the product. I'm not sure what to enter at the "Enter a capture filter" prompt, and clicking on various listed networks and other UI elements doesn't seem to populate it. There's a link at the bottom of that page to the User Guide, but it doesn't cover what to do with this Welcome screen

Search for "welcome" in the User's Guide or here are a few videos that show the Welcome screen:
Wireshark Interface Configuration - Tony Fortunato
Getting started with Wireshark - John Strand
(Please ignore John's suggestion to run as root - if that's an issue we can point you to steps to set permissions)

Chris Greer is teaching the Wireshark fundamentals class at Shark Fest this fall.
Here is his YouTube Channel that includes a getting started video then on to more advanced topics.

A quick summary is as follows:

  • Welcome, a nice welcome message
  • Open, an active label to open existing capture files
  • A list of previously opened capture files
  • Capture, an active label to open the capture dialog
  • Capture filter entry, an text box to enter the optional capture filter
  • A list of detected capture interfaces, either network or otherwise, with their current activity
  • A few links to information resources
  • Version information

Probably the first things you want to do is either capture some network traffic, by clicking an active network interface, or opening an existing capture file. And then go from there.

The documentation is in the works, so the User's Guide is set to improve, also on this point.
