Hi all

I want to run wireshark on a Windows 7 laptop to capture a wireless transmission from a 802.11ac access point to 802.11ac clients. However, the laptop does not have 802.11ac support on it. So I plan to use an adapter such as this one (11ac wifi adapter) to enable 802.11ac support on the laptop. With this adapter plugged into the laptop, will it be possible to use wireshark to capture a packet trace? Meaning, will this be a simple plug and play activity or will I need to change/modify some settings on wireshark to enable this?

Here is a detailed discussion on the topic. The short answer... not so simple. 802.11ac is difficult to capture and Windows-based systems are typically not preferred platforms, but in some cases you might be successful.

This and especially the old site had many questions on some of the issues related to wireless packet capture.
