Wireless controls are not supported in this version of wireshark

This post is a wiki. Anyone with karma >750 is welcome to improve it.

Whenever I select the wireless toolbar I get the above message. Is it a configuration issue or just not supported.

Info macOS High Sierra 10.13.2, MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) Wireshark Version 2.4.4 (v2.4.4-0-g90a7be1)

It's (currently) just not supported on macOS. (It's not unsupportable, but nobody's written the code to support it, using, for example, the CoreWLAN framework.)
