Why is Wireshark using .acp file extension for capture files in Windows when that extension is clearly for aacPlus audio files?

.ACP File Extension

Developer: International Standards Organization

File Type: aacPlus Audio File

My RealPlayer has the ability to associate this particular extension (.acp). I would think this would mess up what wireshark would want to do if that really happened.

Looks like on their website there is the ability to have your version of the .acp file extension.

There are 2 other file types using the ACP file extension!

.acp Alfresco Content Package

.acp EditPlus Auto-Completion File

Because, for some unknown reason, the installers for Windows and macOS register '.acp" as a suffix for capture files that Wireshark can read, even though the Wireshark code itself doesn't include ".acp".

Please file a bug on this at the Wireshark Bugzilla.

Here is a list of file extensions wireshark uses when saving a capture file. image description

.acp is not among them. This looks more like a type error when the file was saved.
Statistics -> Capture File Properties will tell you more about the origin of the capture .
