I always use a configurable switch for this purpose. Port 8 on the switch is configured to send all packets on this port - here I attach my laptop running wireshark. Now it is just to place the switch on the cable i want to "tap".

Port 8 on the switch is configured to send all packets on this port - here I attach my laptop running wireshark.
Now it is just to place the switch on the cable i want to "tap"."tap - the cable to the DHCP-server.
