I can think of 3 ways to install a more recent version on RedHat:

• Compile and build from source
• Use the alternatives command
• Download and install a more recent RPM for either RHEL or CentOS.

And maybe upgrade to RHEL8 first? I cannot test the above myself because RHEL6 is too old.
