Edimax wifi adapter makes wireshark not responding, why?

So, i just bought the Edimax EW-7811Un Wireless USB Adapter to be able to sniff in monitor mode, however whenever i plug it in being either on my win10 laptop or Kali linux virtual machine, and try to run wireshark, it is super slowed down and before i even get to ticking the "monitor mode" field it freezes and i get a "wireshark stopped responding" error. When this happens the internet disconnects entirely, also for the host machine of the vm.

Ive tried: 1. On a desktop computer AND its own Kali virtual machine 2. On my laptop AND its own Kali virtual machine 3. Updating/reinstalling the driver 4. Other ports 5. Someone on the internet suggested it could be because of power issues, so i tried unticking the following power-management setting: Device manager → Edimax wifi adapter → Properties → Power Management → Untick “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”

Still the same problem. Anyone have an idea what could be wrong?

Background: Im currently studying Cyber security on a University where i live, and setting up a Raspberry pi(when i get the wifi adapter to work on my laptop ill use it on my pi) to be able to sniff in monitor mode is part of our current exam, so im not trying to do anything illegal here, just learning and trying to pass this exam. However im having so much hardware issues that im getting pressured on time and therefor very close to just skipping Monitor mode, and just seeing what kind of information i can capture without it. I really hope i can get to solve this task as it was intended though.
