I know that to get Wireshark working on Windows 8, you set the installer to Windows 7 Compatibility mode (see this Question). My questions is this: Is this workaround going to be the only way to install Wireshark or is there going to be a native version of Wireshark for Windows 8?

The program work fine so far in windows 8 but to install winpcap I had to change the compatibility of the installer to windows 7.

What do you mean by "Native Version"? If you mean Metro, I think that's extremely unlikely due to the restrictions on Metro app capabilities.

If you mean a "classic desktop" app that just installs on Win 8 without having to change any installer settings, then that's much more likely. As usual, it depends on either one of the core developers finding time to do that, or someone stepping up to the plate and contributing patches.

I was meaning a "classic desktop" app. The only issue that I see with Wireshark on Windows8 is the WinPCap issue. I have asked WinPCap about this and been told that there is no intention of making an installer that works with Windows 8. This becomes a problem for Wireshark and I was wondering how they were going to handle this.

I wonder why a special installer would be necessary for Windows 8? I admit that I'm not really deep into Windows 8, but if it is not possible to install a "regular" windows application on Windows 8, without any changes, Microsoft will be out of business, pretty soon, as they will loose their installed application base with Windows 8. I can't believe that such a thing would be the strategy of Microsoft? Maybe I'm wrong, but ....

I changed the compatibility to Window 7 on the properties icon and it installed properly.

I bet, that's what Microsoft will choose as default for all applications in the final release of Windows 8. Otherwise they will be in deep trouble. Nobody is going to buy Windows 8 if one cannot run the beloved tools without hassles.

But wait! Maybe they have a secret master plan. They know anyway, that nobody will buy Windows 8, shortly after the great Windows 7 transition of the last 2 years ("Vista Reloaded" for customers - Let's wait for the next version ...). So, they don't have to care about that specific problem and try to establish a whole new application eco system (MS App Store) with Windows 8. Then they hope and pray that there will be enough compatible applications for the next release of Windows, which will be called Windows 95, erm Windows 9.5. We will see .... ;-))

As Anders mentioned: Your question on Winpcap-users is unanswered (if that was you). Where did you get the answer from and what was the explanation of not having an installer compatible with Windows 8?

I emailed the company that is now responsible for WinPCap (http://www.riverbed.com/us/) and that is what they have informed me. With Wireshark, are they going to be looking at something different or is the answer from WinPCap going to be the answer that Wireshark gets as well.

good question. Please file a bug report at https://bugs.wireshark.org and post the bug id (link) here.

Thank you!

FYI, there hasn't been any discussion on the dev list about replacing WinPCap for the Windows build of Wireshark.

Wireshark just bundles the WinPCap install in the installer, no changes are made.

NB I changed the question title to better reflect (IMHO) the actual question.

which means that the current WinPcap installation included in Wireshark will fail on Windows 8!?!

Possible Solution: Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit

Normal applications may work without any change. However, WinPCap is not a normal application. It works on driver level and therefore is restricted to the new driver rules on Win8.

  1. intall without winpcap
  2. download winpcap from http://www.winpcap.org/install/default.htm
  3. start with compatibility mode and run under win7 compatibility, admin rights, do this anywhere when in windows was compatibility issue. after that it was installed without 2 option. when instal - also do with boot option. 3.also it is in http://forums.xbconnect.com/showthread.php?p=188042 after 2 installation it work
