how to restore snaplen to "default"?

As an experiment I've changed snaplen value from one of my interfaces. It's initial value was "default". I changed to a certain value and now I would like to leave again to "default", but it's not possible. At least I cannot do it, I just can select a number but not "default". Any idea?

(Bugs were moved to Gitlab Issues in 2020)

The comments on the issue now include a workaround by changing the snaplen value in Preferences.

If you set it to 262144, it should be restored to the default value. You can verify this by closing the Capture Options Window and then opening it again to see if it was set back to the default. That value is mentioned in the Wireshark man page (and other man pages as well) as being the default snaplen.

I shouldn't be forced to know a magic value for this. Entering nothing or entering '0' should revert to 'Default', IMHO.

Maybe so, but my answer only reflects what is, not what should be. An enhancement bug report could be opened for this though.

True, it was never intended as a remark on your comment.

Yeah, no worries. I agree with you by the way; it would be nice if there was an easier way to restore the default without having to actually know what it is.

Bug 15389 has been filed.
