just downloaded 4.6.9. Get German when installed. tried again using the US server. same result. just because my ISP is German DOES NOT MEAN I want this version. no option to choose language in the installer (which is English).

This needs fixing. Really annoying. No need to see where I am. Version 4.4.2 is real English.

Is your OS by any chance in German, I don't know since when, but the default language for Wireeshark follows your system language. This can be changed under Preferences -> Appearance -> Language (at the bottom of the options.

Why did you add this? It does not help people helping you if you project your frustration to a team that spends their own time building Wireshark and providing some level of support, it does no exactly get them in the right mood to help you.

Win 11 OS is EN-GB (installed and locale) and always has been. Never had any other Win language installed.

Why did you add this?

I fully appreciate the efforts of the Wireshark team and have indeed used Wireshark for many years. The sudden change of language cost me quite some time to restore to a previous version, as well as jumping through all the hoops to register to ask a question.

Since Wireshark does not have specific language versions, somehow the auto-detect-language function is not working correctly in your case. Or a profile setting is forcing it to German.

  • What is the current setting under Preferences -> Appearance -> Language?
  • Can you change it to English and does it indeed change the Wireshark GUI to English?
  • Which Configuration Profile are you using? What happens when you create a new one (Edit -> Configuration Profiles then click on + at the lower left corner), as that will start with a factory default profile.

from my registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\Language Installlanguage REG_SZ 0809

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\Locale] "(Default)"="00000809"

this is en-gb

Version 4.4.2 installs to english correctly.

No more time at present to get and re-install/test/modify 4.6.9

I checked the open issues at https://gitlab.com/wireshark/wireshar... and found !21410 which seems to resemble your issue. It is caused by a bug in Qt and will hopefully be solved before the next release, but of course we do not manage their timelines. If I read the work-item correctly, there is a workaround that you can try when you have time for it in the future.

Windows 11 has support for multiple languages. You almost certainly have English (United Kingdom) as your preferred language followed by German as a secondary language in your language preferences in Windows. Locales have to include a territory. Wireshark does not have a specifically English (United Kingdom) translation. It has a English (United States) translation and also a German (Germany) translation. The question then is the appropriate fallback.

Windows, by default, if someone indicates that they prefer English (United Kingdom) followed by German (Germany), will prefer English (United States) if a en-GB translation is not available (unless someone, in a rare case, has indicated that they prefer en-GB, de-De, and en-US in that order, with German in the middle.) Qt, in the middle of changing up their preferred language scheme, changed the default fallback in what I believe is an unexpected way, so that you end up getting your explicitly requested ...(more)
