How can I unmask a phony mac address

asked 2024-11-03 06:55:33 +0000

I signed into my xfinity admin page to check for any unwanted connections or unknown devices. I immediately noticed a no name device under "connected devices" and marked down the machine address listed. To my surprise there is no address in the oui database. Since mac addresses technically can't be changed, I am guessing who ever no name may be, is using a mask to hide their identity. If I am correct, how do I reveal the actual mac address, and if I'm mistaken, then what's going on?

  1. At least some Ethernet adapters can transmit packets with a source address that's not the MAC address of the adapter, and can be configured to accept unicast packets to a MAC address other than the MAC address of the adapter.
  2. At least some Ethernet adapters store the MAC address in an EEPROM that can be modified.
