Unable to see external network traffic?

asked 2024-07-05 20:55:45 +0000

Before I begin, I'd like to say I am fairly new to this network stuff. I understand some protocols, ports, difference between private and public IPs. My wifi is a WPA2-Personal secure network just for a little info on my wifi and I don't know which security types I am unable to do this. I've enabled promiscuous mode in the interface settings of Wireshark and yet I can only see wifi traffic going from and too my device. I'm unsure of whatelse to do and I don't have any other device to see if it is my device that is the problem.

You need to use monitor mode on Wi-Fi; promiscuous mode doesn't work. See the Wireshark Wiki's capture-setup-on-Wi-Fi page for more information.

You will also have to provide a key to decrypt the traffic. See the Wireshark Wiki's "How to decrypt 802.11" page for more information.

I forgot to mention that I already had a key. I do have a question about the setup link you've sent, it states if I get wireshark on linux, macos, or BSD then setting up monitor mode should be simpler than on windows. So I assume, just like promiscuous mode is an option, on linux and macos, monitor mode should be just like that, or so that's what the guide is making it seem like, right? And from my Google search, if I just booted up my Arch Linux VM and download wireshark, that'll work right?

I'd just like to make sure before I go through the hastle of booting up and installing everything as soon as I get home.
