Inserting a tap between ISP modem and router kills the Internet

I bought a network tap (Q-Linx 10/100/1000) and have used it to capture traffic between my laptop and the router. However, when I try to insert the tap between the ISP modem and the router to capture all my home network traffic, the modem immediately stops and I lose the Internet.

I have 1-gig fiber to the modem and Cox wifi router.

Thanks for the replies.

Printed on the cable "UTP 26AWGx4P CAT 6 PATCH CABLE". I remember seeing a crossover cable and it was clearly labeled as such. I figured a patch cable was straight through, but maybe I'm wrong about that assumption.

I look up the instructions on the Internet that should work for 100M/1000M. It says use ports 1 and 2 (WAN modem and Wifi router) and the yellow LED should turn on or blink. Is the connection between the modem and router a straight or crossover cable?

I tried a similar test with Netoptics TP-CU3. It was 1000M electrical connection between Surfboard modem in bridge mode and TP Wi-Fi router. The cables are straight cat-6. It works fine (using it right now).
