Cannot initiate capture session on a device after having installed 4.0.0 [closed]

On Windows, I have used WireShark a lot of times.

Today, I followed the invitation to install 4.0.0, I installed the npcap proposed with the installation. With the new version, I cannot access my Ethernet interface (I tried the Wi-Fi and it worked). I get the message : "The capture session could not be initiated on capture device [...]"

I reinstalled version 3.6.8 leaving the newest npcap and I get the same message.

After that, I uninstalled newest npcap, reinstalled (again) version 3.6.8 but checking the npcap installation.

With this setup, I was able to start the capture on the interface.

I now have a working WireShark but I want to be able to install the newest softwares at some points ! ;-)

This is an npcap issue, please report the problem over at their GitHub issues page.

And in the mean time: update to Wireshark 4.0.0, without updating Npcap.

Npcap 1.60 works with Windows 11, Npcap 1.71 does not.

This is incorrect, it does work for me at least. If it didn't work in the general case, the npcap issues list would be full of complaints rather than the sporadic few. The 1.7x series have had some install\uninstall issues that are ongoing.

Thanks for your observation. Feel free to also comment on https://gitlab.com/wireshark/wireshar... and https://github.com/nmap/npcap/issues/628 that describe the same observations with Windows 11, Wireshark 4.0.0 and Npcap 1.71.

Npcap 1.74 and upper doesn't have the problem. Unfortunately, Wireshark 4.0.10 is still proposing to install Npcap 1.71 (which has the issue).
