Track data usage on server

asked 2022-03-28 23:01:46 +0000

Hello we are trying to find out how much data goes in and out from a specific Windows server. We installed Wireshark on it and started a full unfiltered capture, but it quickly ate up all the CPU and RAM resources and had be shut down after a couple hours. We are hoping to run it over several days to get a better view of how much data traffic there is coming and going via the network on the server. Are we able to be more specific on our capture, and if so, what would be good filters/options to adjust? Also, can we throttle the system resource usage that Wireshark uses while running a capture?

Since you are mentioning it is a Windows server I would have a look at the following blog https://devblogs.microsoft.com/script....

Have a look at ntopngfrom our friends over at ntop.org. Their tool does precisely what you need and more. And they have more tools in that area, if you need.

If you just want an overview of traffic to/from a device, wireshark is probably not the best tool for the job. SNMP and related systems would likely be a much better way to collect and display this information.
