I want to generate a log of ip addresses from a tap behind my gateway without having to capture and store all the traffic. I might want to store some traffic from each new address encountered. Do I need to do something like a custom capture filter for this?

You need to use the right tool for the job. Wireshark is more like a microscope, to look at all details of al packets. Sure it can do some of this stuff, but not in the way you want it.

Have a look at our friends at ntop for instance, they specialise in these things.

Thanks, I'll take a look. Seems like the traffic monitor tools are overkill for what I want.
