Wireshark not working on MacOS Big Sur

I installed wireshark on my Macbook (Big Sur). When running Wireshark the menu appears at the top, but when selecting "File/Open", nothing happens and the menu disappears. Wireshark is then in some error state until I "force quit" it.

Why does the standard install process not work?

What happens if you drag /Applications/Wireshark.app to the trash and then download and install it again?
