What type of router? Is this a device that plugs into your home Internet (DSL modem, cable modem, etc.) and has Wi-Fi, a few Ethernet ports, or both, or is it a more "enterprise" type of router/switch?

Yes, it can but it requires the proper capture setup.

Refer to the "Switched Ethernet" section of the Ethernet capture setup wiki page for more information. You might also want to reference Jasper Bongertz's blog article about SPAN ports titled, The Network Capture Playbook Part 4 – SPAN Port In-Depth.

Given the way the question was posted I would be inclined to say: No , you can't unless you know what you are doing. As I estimate the experience of the person asking the question is limited in this regard it might prove rather a challenge to get it organized. It more or less requires root like access to the router.
