Only one protocol 802.11 when sniffing over monitor mode and open network.

asked 2020-02-15 12:51:26 +0000

I am trying to capture packets on an open network (the SSID does not have any password). During packet capture, all I see is 802.11 under protocol column. Please see snapshot for better understanding. https://imgur.com/MCzh03f

One of the wireshark question lead me to this solution --> https://wiki.wireshark.org/HowToDecry... but as I am sniffing on open network, I don't understand why to decrypt the packet using this method.

I am a newbie in this thing, so please ignore my talent :|

How do I see other protocols like udp, http, etc on monitor mode ?

The first layer of root cause here is you don’t have any data or QoS Data frames which would contain the higher layer protocols you are seeking. I’ll guess that your capture system does not have the same capabilities as your WiFi system so you can miss the high data rate frames.

The solution is to either get a capture system with capabilities equal to or greater than the test traffic performance envelope or reduce the capabilities of the test traffic to match the capture system. If you search here this comes up routinely.
