3.2.1 Win10 Doesn't find the ethernet adapter...

asked 2020-02-13 19:35:31 +0000

It was running fine, there was a "forced" Windows update and now the ethernet interface is gone. I've deleted 3.2.1 and the associated pcap's several times with the same result. I went so far as to reload 2.6 (I think) and it was able to find the adapters... went back to 3.2.1 and GONE!

Help!!

Can you provide the output of wireshark -v or Help->About Wireshark for the working and not working installs?
It's pretty common that npcap doesn't work well with Windows 10.

IMHO it's not common at all. There are over 500,000 downloads of Wireshark Windows installers per month, and if it was common we'd hear all about it.

Yes, some folks do appear to have issues, they seem unable to search here for the same questions that have been asked before, they stop responding when trying to help them (hopefully because things are now working for them) and very rarely ever report back if things have been fixed.

I have personally installed Wireshark on dozens of Win 10 machines and apart from a couple of versions of npcap that did have issues, haven't come across the problems described by others.

If a simple uninstall, reboot and reinstall of npcap doesn't fix it then the best place to go is npcap support.

Fair enough. I could have phrased that more better. :-)

Version 3.2.1 (v3.2.1-0-gbf38a67724d0) Doesn't see adapters

Version 2.6.6 (v2.6.6-0-gdf942cd8) Can see adapters

I assumed this is what was being asked?

Not really. Post the contents of the About Wireshark | Wireshark tab. Newer versions have a handy "Copy to Clipboard" button to do that for you.

It's likely that 2.6.6 is using WinPcap and 3.2.1 is using npcap. I suggest you manually uninstall npcap and WinPcap, reboot and then install the latest npcap (don't change the install options).
