The right adapter depends on what you need to do; with no requirements, there can't be a 'right' adapter to buy. Different adapters have different capabilities and features, including stability. I have found there is no one adapter that can do everything in the wifi capture space.
A Macbook can be an excellent choice - I just bought a Pro and don't have problems but others have significant issues making them work.
Some good adapters to get started with for monitor mode are current Intel adapters (not USB), and for USB based, the RTL8812AU/8814AU series are OK, as are the Mediatek 7612 ones. Still pros/cons, though:Intel won't inject, but are stable. Some of the RTLs are 3x3, but not all Linux distributions have the driver.
